How to Replace an Object in a Photo With AI

A practical object-replacement workflow for matching scale, camera angle, materials, lighting, shadows, reflections, and surrounding details.

Object replacement is harder than object removal because the new item has to belong in the scene. A believable swap must fit the original perspective, occupy the right amount of space, interact with nearby surfaces, and inherit the lighting conditions of the photo.

Define the replacement before you generate

Name the object, material, color, shape, and level of detail you need. "Replace this with a lamp" leaves many decisions open. "Replace the selected ceramic lamp with a compact brushed-steel desk lamp, facing left" gives the model a clearer target.

Decide which properties should come from the old object. You may want the new item to keep the same position and approximate size, or you may want it to fit the surface naturally even if its proportions differ.

Select the full footprint of the old object

Include the visible object, the pixels where it touches another surface, and any shadow or reflection that belongs to it. Leaving the old shadow outside the marked area can produce a convincing new object with an impossible silhouette underneath it.

Avoid swallowing nearby hands, faces, logos, or furniture into the selection. When two objects overlap, it is often safer to replace the unobstructed area first and repair the overlap with a smaller second pass.

Describe perspective and scale in ordinary language

You do not need camera terminology for every edit. Phrases such as "at the same angle," "resting on the table," "partly behind the vase," and "roughly the same height as the original" give useful spatial constraints.

If the scene has a strong viewpoint, state it. A product photographed from above needs a replacement seen from above. A low-angle street photo needs an object whose underside and vertical lines match that viewpoint.

Match the physical behavior of the material

Materials respond differently to light. Glass should show transmission and reflections. Polished metal should reflect nearby colors. Fabric should retain folds and soft shadows. Matte plastic should not suddenly produce mirror-like highlights.

Include one material cue and one lighting cue in the prompt instead of stacking ten style words. A concise instruction is easier to inspect and revise.

  • Replace the selected paper cup with a clear glass cup; keep the hand unchanged and match the window reflections.
  • Replace the chair with a natural oak chair at the same angle; preserve the floor contact and soft afternoon shadow.
  • Replace the red bag with a matte black leather bag; keep the strap position, folds, and person unchanged.
  • Replace the sign with a blank painted metal sign; match the weathering, perspective, and overcast light.

Inspect contact points, shadows, and reflections

The eye accepts a surprising amount of texture variation, but it notices when an object floats. Check where feet meet the floor, where a hand grips an item, where a wheel touches the road, and where a product sits on a shelf.

Then inspect cast shadows and nearby reflections. The shadow should point in the same direction as other shadows, and reflective surfaces should acknowledge the new object's color and position.

Use replacements responsibly

Object replacement is useful for concepts, creative posts, mockups, and preproduction decisions. For listings and catalogs, do not add accessories, hide defects, or change product features in a way that could mislead a buyer.

Label conceptual images when the distinction is not obvious. The strongest commercial workflow uses AI to plan the shot, then captures accurate final imagery when product truth matters.
